i came to the point of walking in the street and singing!i realized this is the first of my 24 summers so far that I welcome in the most beatiful contry in Europe-Greece.After that I went to try a dress and looked at my body in the mirror (I dont have big one at home so for several months I didn't see myself in full size)-I realized that after so much exercise that I thought it had no effect suddenly I look great!after all this I went to buy sun milk and get prepared 4 vecations,need it sincearly-since I had so much troubble for the past months.

What is Milk Thistle Used for?

What is milk thistle used for and why does it work?  Those are today’s questions.  Let’s take a look at the answers.

Milk thistle is considered a weed in most parts of the world, but it is cultivated in some countries, because of its uses as a health supplement and a pharmaceutical product.  The only recognized mainstream medical use, currently, is to protect the liver from the fatal damage that can be caused by ingestion of the poisonous mushroom known as the death cap.

Penicillin and hyperbaric oxygen are the most common treatments for death cap mushroom poisoning.  Studies have shown that treatment with the active compounds found in milk thistles increase the survival rate over penicillin-treatment, alone.  The active compounds found in the thistles are called silymarin or Silibinin.

The traditional use of the plant was as a liver tonic.  Traditional healers recognized the symptoms indicating liver damage or disease.  At some point, they learned that the seeds of the blessed milk thistle plant could heal the damage and fight off the disease.

Modern-day researchers have attempted to confirm the traditional use.  In a study published in 2007, Swiss researchers concluded that the mechanism of action is complex; meaning that they don’t know why it works, but it does.

So, it is not difficult to answer what is milk thistle used for, but it is difficult to answer “why” it works.  Silymarin is known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.  Antioxidants normally work to prevent free radical damage.  The latest research indicates that they can reverse it, too.

We would have to assume that things like death cap mushrooms contain free radicals that target the liver and kidneys.  We would also have to assume that silymarin can neutralize those free radicals.  But, it could be some other effect.  We just don’t know.  Here’s another question.

What is milk thistle used for when it comes to the skin?  Researchers believe that a potential use of silymarin is to protect against oxidative stress caused by exposure to UV radiation from the sun.  Exposure to UV radiation from the sun contributes to skin cancer and is one of the causes of skin aging; wrinkles, sagging, age spots, etc.

Sunscreens do not protect against oxidative stress caused by UV exposure.  They filter out the UV radiation.  They are only effective for a short period of time and must be reapplied, on a regular basis.

Not only have researchers looked at what is milk thistle used for and what are its potential uses, they have also looked at the benefits of other antioxidants.  So far, the most promising results have been seen with the topical use of coenzyme Q10.  Anti-aging creams containing it have the ability to reverse wrinkles and sun damage.

Make no mistake about it.  With the combination of good dietary supplements and nourishing skincare products, we may be able to live longer healthier lives and look good while we are doing it.  Now that you know; what is milk thistle used for, maybe it’s time to learn more about the importance of good nutrition and safe skincare products.
