Post dated checks for reward payment?

Hi so the story is I lost my diamond cross at a tanning salon. It means a lot to me sentimentally. Now A whole week has gone by and I suddenly remembered what I did with it. When I talked to the asst manager this morning he said he didn't see anyting but there was a slight chance that it would be in the safe and when I told him I Would pay a reward for the return of my cross a few hours later I get a call saying it was found. I realize people are not honorable but I want to be honest to my word, so is it a good idea to post date checks to pay for the reward amount? That way it isn't all at once to hit my bank account but I am still being true to my word?

You can absolutely post-date the check, but you might want to be sure to advise the person not to cash it before that date. Banking regulations do not require your bank to refuse a post-dated check if it is presented prior to the date on the check. If you give me a check that is post-dated for next week, but I present it to your bank today they will likely cash it for me. Banks often don't even bother to check the date on checks that are deposited through an ATM. Even if they do, there is no law requiring them to refrain from processing the check right away.
