How to become an Australian Resident. Please Help.?

Hello, Im a British National currently in Australia. My girlfriend is an Australian Citizen living in Australia. We have made the choice between us that I will remain in Australia. We dont want no fancy big wedding etc... we just want to be able to obtain for myself the correct documents and follow the right procedures to obtaining residency in Australia. We have both heard of this Civil Union procedure which we think can get me residency in Australia but all we seem to be finding is same sex marriages. Myself and my girlfriend are both situated in Queensland, Gold Coast. If anybody could help us with information regarding myself gaining residency here in Australia and would be grant me an Australian passport etc please give your answers as kinda stuck on what to do and is very frusterating for us both. Well for a start, if you've lived together in a de facto relationship for at least 12 months and are able to prove it, you don't need to go through any civil union or marriage like procedure to qualify for a Partner visa. In fact, if you haven't lived together for 12 months, a civil union won't help in any way as they're not recognised here.

If you can meet the cohabitation requirement (or if you marry - no cohabitation required if you're married), you can apply for an onshore Partner visa with your Australian girlfriend/wife as your sponsor. You will have to provide evidence of the length of your relationship and proof of the fact that it is 'genuine and continuing' and not a sham entered into just to get a visa for you. Your Partner visa will be temporary for 2 year from when you apply and then becomes permanent if the relationship is still intact at that time.

Your visa grant will take only a few months and if necessary, you will be granted a Bridging visa (with the same work privileges as your current visa) while you are waiting on the decision.

You can apply for citizenship and then a passport after you've lived in Australia for at least 4 years including 1 year as a Permanent Resident.
