The Power of Mind Can Bring Us to the Summit!

Suddenly, I found myself at the summit of my lifelong dream… Standing on the top!  This was it!  It dawned on me in slow motion.  Though exhausted, I felt an indescribable lifetime worth of emotion.  At the summit, there was instant sheer joy while- hearing the rhythm of my heartbeat and my breathing, feeling the embrace of the breeze and the sunlight, watching the relaxing green meadows and mountains nearby, and gazing at the almost within-reach clouds and sky.  I took all the chances to savor such marvelous moment and view- up and down.  Then, I looked back…

 

I always had dreamt of getting to the mountain summit.  Adventurous, I wanted to experience the challenges of mountaineering.  Hadn’t yet stumbled into climbing, I attempted to put together a mountaineering team, last May 2008.  But only one expressed enthusiasm to join.  Then, I learned that there was a group that does fun climbs.  I explored and reached out to said group.

 

On July 5, 2008, my six new buddies and I got out and headed off to summit Mt. Pico de Loro.  Being veteran mountaineers, Imao, Nelson and Jing led the adventure. 

 

We started the vertical climb to base camp through the hot, dense and steep trail.  With a 20-kilo backback, we had been trekking on lose rocks, muddy dirt and wild insects.  Though I didn’t fall, I always almost lost my balance as my heavy pack made it difficult to maneuver. With this, I concentrated harder than ever. When we were about 45 minutes near the base camp, said 45 minutes seemed eternity.  From that point, I heard a voice inside me, “going thru the challenges of reaching the summit is only the first part, I still have to go down.  And most mistakes happen on the descent.  Can I do it?” I conditioned my mind to counter said voice- “I can do it!”

 

It took us 4 hours to reach the base camp, from the jump-off point.  Slowly, every step up required great effort.  We took several 5-minute breaks.  As stressed by Jing, “Mountaineering is not a racing sport.  What matters is, we reach our goal- the summit, safely.  There lies the success.”  After an hour, other mountaineering groups arrived at the camp.  “Toot, toot…” as my mobile phone chimed.  When I was about to tell my mates about the Sun’s signal, one mountaineer from the other group shouted- “Yes guys! Sun has signal!”  I hurriedly phoned my boss to tell him about our mountaineering adventure, and that even at that location Sun still generated a strong signal. 

 

From the base camp, it took us 45 minutes to approach the peak.  We clung altogether at the summit, and took photographs.  “Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints. Kill nothing but time”, as Denniece and Imao echoed the mountaineers’ motto.  Despite the tiredness, we felt inexpressible fulfillment, as we were able to conquer the summit assault.  We could hear the cheers from within us.

 

During our descent from the summit to the base camp, Pancho accidentally fell down and kissed the rock.  Luckily, he was able to hold onto the bamboo thickets which prevented him from falling further down the slope.  Jun grasped his hands to get up.  The first time climber, Pancho, jokingly exclaimed, “no need to worry guys, I just did the usual ritual of kissing the rock.”

 

The following day, we socialized with the other mountaineers.  While mingling with them, I took the chance to tell them about the career opportunities at Sun.  I handed out business cards and answered their questions about job openings at the company.

 

From the base camp, we had a smooth and fast descent.  We reached the foot of the mountain, where a road served as the boundary between the mountain and the jump-off point, in just 2 hours.  Before I crossed it, I glanced back at the trail and recalled how the dream that I had so many years ago, had finally come true.  Values and learnings kept flashing on my mind.  I realized that it’s more than conquering challenges...  It’s rewarding life! 

 

If I could be anywhere in the world, it would be at the summit and in the best of everything…  As my mantra goes:  “What your mind can conceive, you can do! Just have the determination, focus and persistence in pursuing so…”
