How dangerous is tanning in the tanning beds?

I have to wear a prom dress coming up this March. I am a health freak and do not believe in tanning beds. I do however believe in 15plus min. in the sun everyday. I am pale at the moment and im going to be wearing a beautiful yellow dress.
Will tanning beds hurt me if i start tanning this march?
How long do you tan for?
Will i get rubbery skin like most of the girls?

Tanning beds are not dangerous as long as you don't over expose yourself, so don't allow yourself to burn. Prolonged over exposure can increase your chances of getting skin cancer but too little UV exposure leads to vitamin D deficiency, which increases your chances of getting other types of cancer like breast, bowel, colon and pancreatic cancer. So it's 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. In other words, you're damned if you do and you are damned if you don't.

You should begin your tanning regime three months out from the date you want to wear your dress. If you only start one month out then you will not give yourself enough time and may end up over-exposing yourself in a rush to get that nice glow. If you start a few months out then you can go in for small amounts of time, every second or third day and by the time you have to wear your dress you will have achieved the same nice glow but without the rush and over-exposure.

A few rules to follow though:
- start out on the shortest time allowed and then each time you visit add one minute to your tanning time, this will help to build up your tolerance to the UV rays
- do not go more often than once every two days
- if you are still red more than 24 hours later then you went in for too long and you should reduce your time

If you are like me then you will find that you will start on 3 minutes and then quickly progress to 6 minutes where you stay for two or three weeks before being able to increase your time again up to around 8 or 9 minutes.
