What SPF should I get?
I have a fair skin and I've been using a 20 SPF Piz Buin sunscreen.
After five days at the beach, I haven't burnt but also I haven't tanned at all.
Should I try using a sunscreen of lower SPF, for example 15 SPF?
What do you suggest?
You can totally get SPF 15. The difference in protection from SPF 15 to SPF 30 is minimal.
SPF 15 gives 94% more protection to your skin
SPF 30 gives 97% more protection to your skin
SPF 40-65+ up to 98.5%
As those SPF numbers increase significantly, the percentage of protection only increases by a minute percentage.
You would be fine switching to SPF 15. Make sure you are getting a "broad spectrum" sunscreen though. Sunscreen Protection Factors in the US are only regulated for their UVB Factor, not UVA.
UVA rays AGE us.
UVB rays BURN us.
Physical sunscreens are great because both Zinc and Titanium offer protection in the UVA and UVB range. You may be only protecting yourself in the UVB range right now.
I like using natural mineral sunscreens. I use my kid's sunscreen. It's called TruKid. I found it in a hotel in Hawaii and have never looked back.
