Heating For Bearded Dragons?
I have a Exo Terra Dual Top Canopy with a 35 watt Exo Terra Sun Glo Halogen Daylight Lamp the temp in the basking area is about 86-88F i dont think this is hot enough,i was thinking about getting a lamp with a normal household 50 watt halogen bulb (we have them in our spot lamps) and i measured the temp and its at 95-110 which i thinks perfect!) would this be ok to use i do have the proper uvb 10% tubes too. plus what is the right basking spot temp? ive read its between 95-110 and loads of other people say different ranging from 88,90,95,110,115,even 80!!. please help!!!
A normal 50 watt Halogen bulb would be excellent, a lot of people are moving to those for the quality of light they give too, so that would be a perfect basking spot.
95-110 is good because they have trouble digesting below 95, that is the minimum temp for optimum digestion and so you want at least that or more. But once you get past 110 it becomes a bit too hot for them, you can observe this in their behavior of gaping and avoiding basking spots hotter than that. And most people recommend never going to 115 or over because you find a hot day and the temperature in there can spike up with the help of the outside temp and that hot basking spot to dangerous levels that can cause brain damage. So that's the reasoning for the 95-110 range. In short, I agree, 95-110 is the ideal range for the basking spot. Of course, there needs to be a cool area as well on the other side of the tank for him to thermo regulate.
In short, you are right on both with the bulb you chose and with the temperature range you are getting with it.
