How do you take really good care of your pure water fish? ?

My husband and I want to get a fish tank but had bad experiences where our poor little fish died, and another where this one fish that wasn't supposed to normally eat other fish did. we really need to know if there are certain things to do to keep them alive besides clean tank, fresh water and fish food. Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your fish.

First thing is you cannot just fill the tank with water and dump your fish in. Your water needs to have a dechlor/water conditioner especially for fish added to it to make the water safe for your fish.

Secondly you need to cycle the tank prior to getting your fish (really not needed but makes life for you and your fish easier)

Third, you need to acclimate your fish properly when you bring them home. First choose quality fish. Healthy swimming eating with no signs of outward disease. Also key don't buy fish that have just come in from the supplier. You can place them on hold and wait prior to bring them home. Or arrive prior to the store putting them in their tanks....also a good way to get a discount.

Forth, daily and weekly care. Daily, visiually look at your fish to ensure they are outwardly healthy. Feed the required amount for the fish type you have. Weekly cleaning and 25% water change including gravel vacing and glass cleaning is a must. Water testing is also a way to ensure the ammonia or nitrites are not spiking. Water change immediately if they are.

Keep items like ich meds, broad spectium anti bacterial on had just in case.

A clean tank is not a tank for fish. Remember never empty the entire fish tank. That is a YOU clean not fish clean. clean for a fish is low to no ammonia and nitrite. Quality foods and compatable tank mates.
