Alaska, an extended vacation?

i've been thinking about alaska lately. don't really want to start a life up there, but maybe get a job at a ski resort, do some snowboarding and experience the life up there for a minute. how much is it to fly roundtrip, the cost of living, are there even any ski resorts, and how is if it anyone lives up there currently? i picture it like the movie "out cold" so correct me if i'm totally off. anyways it looks like fun to hang in a little village covered in snow. thanks

Alaska is a wonderful place but it's not the movies. While there are ski resorts here they are nothing like in the lower 48. We have 18 hours plus of darkness and temps well below zero in the winter. That makes it a sport for those with real passion, not those taking a pleasure trip.

Extended Travel: Prepare Correctly, Have More Fun

I get excited just thinking about planning another long getaway. At least a month, maybe even more! So I have spent plenty of time figuring out how to prepare for a trip like this. Let’s cover some of the basics.

The first step is to start automating as much of your life as possible. This will make not only your trip easier, but can save you time day to day as well. Start by setting up all of your monthly recurring bills on auto pay. Most companies offer an auto pay feature. For payments that do not have that option, check your online banking. I use a service through my bank that automatically sends out a check for me each month. This saves a lot of time, and while I am away, I do not have to worry about manually making any payments.

Pack lightly. Plan out your wardrobe carefully, and plan to add to it as you travel. Half the fun of traveling is experiencing what life is like in a different part of the world, this should include shopping. Plan out your diet also. It is too easy to go the fast food route, and you will be much healthier and happier if you are eating the right foods. I like to pack small snacks that are easy to take with me, and that helps keep me on track.

One of the best tips that someone gave me is, don’t plan too much. Let your vacation be a vacation. Don’t feel guilty if you spend a couple days laying around doing nothing. It is time to relax! On an extended vacation or trip, if you have to many things planned, you can miss out on some great opportunities you will discover along the way. Let your plans change according to your mood, find something new and different you never would have thought of before! Experience the world, have fun, and don’t worry too much.
