Face Protection Which helmet is safer, a full face or a three quarter with a face shield?
I know the full face is more protection but does the larger veiwing area of the 3/4 negate the difference in safety?
I always think about falling down face first on the pavement.
Would I rather have that 3/4 helmet or full-face?
How many road racers do you see wearing 3/4?
There are less facial injuries with full face helmets. Tough to say if they are 'safer', as the safety testing done usually looks at 'survivability' and not how pretty the rider looks after a wreck.
As far as viewing area, most high quality full-face helmets allow about the same amount of viewing area as high-quality 3/4 helmets. I've seen more problems with riders wearing the wrong (too large) helmet size, and causing sighting problems from that, rather than full face vs. 3/4.
