Ok, I want to get a tan and all, I'm getting one today. Only Prob is that I have exzema, and I dont know what will happen to it. Also I have scabs, from being a clutz. What will happen to those? Will I have paler colored skin where they are? Also, I do NOT want sunless tan, it just washes off. This is my first time with this, I know I cant stay in there long. And since it helps out excema, will it help rosacea? One more question, do famous/models tan? Pretty stupid question, but thats what I am aiming for, and it would suck if I screwed it up. Please do not harrass me about this, it would be pointless. I want answers, not lectures.
Moderate sun exposure helps "cure" eczema. The "sunlight" stimulates the absorption of Vitamin D, which is essential for skin health. This is strictly a short term effect however. Once you stop tanning the eczema will come back. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia:
"[edit] Light therapy
Light therapy using ultraviolet light can help. UVA is mostly used but UVB and Narrow Band UVB are also used. Ultraviolet light exposure carries its own risks, particularly later skin cancers. When light therapy alone is found to be ineffective, it is combined with a substance called psoralen. This PUVA (Psoralen + UVA) combination therapy is termed photo-chemotherapy. Psoralens make the skin more sensitive to UV light, allowing lower doses of UVA to be used."
I can not see it having a beneficial effect on rosacea, as this is caused by having too many small blood capillaries in one area. The only cure for this is laser treatment.
You will not tan where you have scabs. Even after the scab comes off. There is much less melanin in scar tissue than in regular skin.
Like anything, used in moderation, tanning beds or booths can be beneficial.

TAN??? How long?? Middle of winter???? HELP PLEASE!?
Ok so i live right next to a famous tanning place and, im pale i mean moonburn pale! i really want a tan but, its december! is it ok to get dark in december or should i wait? when i go there how long will it take for me to get dark? a week? two weeks? a couple months?
i hope your not talking about sunset tan, those girls are an embarrassment to the tanning industry and i hope ppl don't think that's how all tanning salons are being operated. anyway to answer your question it is perfectly normal for you to want to have some color over the winter, having a tan makes you appear healthier and some tanning salons offer tanning with vitamin D tanning bulbs. let me say that tanning indoors IS A WHOLE LOT SAFER than tanning outdoors. for a number of reasons, one being there are alot of holes in our ozone layer which is letting in a lot more UVB rays, which are the harmful cancer causing rays. tanning bulbs are a safe combination of UVA and UVB rays. when starting out your first few visits DO NOT go the full time, start out low and gradually work your way up. if you burn or become pink don't go back until the redness goes away. anyone will tell you that either way you tan it's not safe, but if you don't over do it by going everyday it can be safe. tanning indoors is safely monitored time exposure and you know exactly how much UV rays you are getting verses the sun b/c the bulbs have a certain amount of watts in them. Moisturization is key to achieving a great tan. dry skin simply does not tan the UV rays will bounce right off of dry skin. it will take about a month to achieve a good dark tan, i recommend using a lotion with hemp seed oil or extract in it, which is a moisturiser and also one that is DHA free which is the stuff that is in bronzers that can make you appear orange or streaky. good luck in your tanning and remember to be safe about it.
