Pepper Spray Would Have Helped

On Monday, March 31, there was a story in The Oklahoman newspaper about a woman who was attacked leaving the store in the evening. The attack was quite brazen – there were other people around in the semi-crowded parking lot and the woman, Sandra Fleming had parked in the closest space to the store. However, this did not stop her attacker. He came up from behind her and dragged her to his car where he managed to get her partially inside it. Had it not been for the quick thinking and bravery of another woman shopper, who knows what would have happened? The other shopper grabbed Sandra’s free arm and pulled, pulled, pulled and held tight until the attacker was forced to let Sandra go. The attacker got away with Sandra’s purse, but Sandra ended up safe.

Jennifer Newell, a police officer, who teaches “common sense self defense” according to the Oklahoman, says that Fleming did what she could by screaming at the top of her lungs, resisting the person and calling attention so that onlookers could help. “There is very little else that Sandra or any person in that situation could do,” Newell stated. However, Sandra Fleming and Jennifer Newell both agree that there are ways that people can protect themselves further. For instance, pepper spray would have helped.
