Flying, TSA & Carry-on Toiletries: zip-top sandwich bags?

I'm flying for a daytrip (interview), so I'm just taking a messenger bag as a carry-on. I want to bring a few common toiletries, such as sunscreen, contact lens solution, and maybe some mouthwash.

For flying on a commercial airline, the TSA specifies that, "all liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a single, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag. Gallon size bags or bags that are not zip-top such as fold-over sandwich bags are not allowed. Each traveler can use only one, quart-size, zip-top, clear plastic bag."

I have Ziploc (zip-top) sandwich bags readily available in the house. However, they're definitely smaller than quart-size. Does anyone know if these will be okay, or must I run out and buy quart-size zip-top bags specifically for flying?

I travel a lot for business, so I asked a TSA guy the same question once.

The reason they specify zip-top bags is for ease of inspection of the items... e.g. they can remove something for closer examination. They also don't want the fold-overs because they can open accidentally & scatter their contents inside their equipment. TSA really doesn't care what brand the bag is (e.g. Glad, Ziploc, generic, etc.)

The reason they specify the 1 bag / quart size is to limit the volume of fluids you're carrying onboard. To keep the security lines moving quickly (rather than counting how many fluid ounces each passenger is carrying), they specify a single quart-sized bag rather than allowing bigger bags or multiples.

They are serious about the 3oz. limit on each item in the bag, though... so think about trial-sized bottles of sunscreen, mouthwash, etc. I have lost a couple full-size tubes of toothpaste this way.

There are no reliable sources of water in the desert regions. One gallon of water per campers, per day is the utter minimum that should be carried. When planning a hike, remember that water weighs roughly 8 pounds per gallon. When the water is half gone, it is time to turn reverse. Don't forget to take extra water for your vehicle. Do not share your water. It will only do you fine if you drink it.

Dress Suitably

In summer, covered clothing slows dryness and minimizes exposure. Good hiking shoes, loose fitting natural-fiber clothing, a wide hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are the necessity things. Desert temperatures can reach over 90° F. and drop below 50° F. in one day. Summer temperatures can reach 125° F. in some locations. In winter, temperatures can frequently drop below freezing. Bring extra humid clothing.
