Will an Iguanna move of a heat source if he gets too hot?

Ok it sounds a bit silly but - a few years back I had an Iguana and in his tank was a heat lamp.
The Iguana loved it - and often slept under it.
One day I found him roasted under the lamp.
It's like he fell asleep and then died of heat.

I've a new iggy and he's chilly.
I don't trust heat lamps now but it is pretty cold in the flat for him and I've no extra heat source.

I put a plastic soda bottle - filled with hot water in his tank and he LOVES it.

Will he know when to move? When he gets too hot - or do iguanas get *heat drunk* or something and not know when to move?

The water isn't hot enough to hurt him but still...

Iguanas are very slow to respond to heat.They won't actually move away from the scorching lamp, or in your case, bottle until they're actually cooking.
Because in the tropics the tops of trees, branches and rocks are always damp, they take a lot of time to get actually hot and the iguana has time to register whether it should move from the sun or not. It registers the sun from above, and when the branch actually dries and begins to heat, its time to move.

Get rid of the bottle, and invest in a good lamp. Have it in the ceiling of the cage, to imitate sun.
If you don't want the lamp to hurt your iguana, shield it with some screen-net (Home Depot or any hardware store, in the window section) so your iguana can't get more than 4"-5" close to the actual lamp. If you don't have basking platforms, get them, and locate them at different intervals and angles vertically. The bottom ones will be cooler and he will be able to choose. Finally, a good thermometer. The iggy won't cook if the temperature is right (88-95F). Invest in a digital one, and stick the probe to where the iguana basks.

Really, ditch the bottle. What feels good to you may not be hot or cold enough to your iguana and its impossible to control. A bottle is something you'd use when the power goes out in an emergency, not regularly. Imagine if your iggy decided to claw at it, experimentally chew it, or the bottle cooled down and there was no heated place for him to go to.
