Is it normal to replace a picture lamp in a Toshiba HGTV every year?
We bought it new in 2005, we're on our 3rd lamp! The 2nd was $80, the 3rd was $175.

Ha Guess what I watch!
These bulbs have a typical half-life of 3,000 - 6,000 hours. With typical viewing habits, most people can expect a bulb to last around 2 years. With non-typical viewing habits, it's not unreasonable to expect a bulb to last only one year. If you use your TV a lot (over 6 hours per day), then I would not be terribly concerned.

Bare Lamps vs. Replacement Lamps with Housing
When it comes to replacing the projector lamp in your TV or projector, there are two options available. One is the bare lamp and the other is the replacement lamp with housing.
A replacement projector lamp generally comes with a housing unit, which contains the bare lamp. When the lamp dies out with usage, you can either replace the entire housing unit or you can just replace the bare lamp inside the existing housing unit.
Whichever replacement projector lamp you opt for, you will get the same performance from both. However, the cost associated with both varies significantly. It is much less expensive and also much easier to replace the bare projector lamp alone rather than replacing the entire housing unit.
When a projector lamp dies out, it is only the lamp that goes bad, whereas the housing unit remains intact. So, by opting to replace only the bare lamp you can cut the replacement almost by half. Moreover, these housing units are made of plastic. When you use replace just the lamp, you can re-use the whole unit, thus helping the environment.
