The Importance of Sunscreen Lotion

Sunscreen is one of the most important products for preserving and protecting one's skin. Over the years, sun-related cancers have been on the rise. Fair-skinned people, especially those with red hair, are particularly vulnerable to these cancers and have to be extra vigilant about applying sun screen lotion whenever they go outside, especially during the hours when the sun is highest in the sky. There are many different types of sunscreen available, designed around different uses.

For the lightest sun exposure and for the winter months, a low SPF—an acronym for "sun protection factor"—sunscreen is appropriate. These products tend to be lighter than the higher SPF versions and, while they provide less protection, they help mitigate the effects of short term sun exposure.

Sunscreen lotion with a high SPF is a necessity for going to the beach, outdoor activities or going out to sea. In all of these cases, the skin is exposed to prolonged, direct sun which, aside from the life-threatening potential, accelerates wrinkling of the skin and can result in other cosmetic effects, such a spotting. For particularly intense activities, sweat resistant products are available that make certain the protective effects endure even when the skin is sweaty.

Children's skin is much more sensitive than adult skin. Sunscreen lotion designed to accommodate this should be used to both protect a child's skin from the sun and to keep the skin free of ingredients that may be appropriate for adult skin, but not for a child's.

Of course, some people do love to tan and some people are lucky enough to have skin that, when exposed to the sun, takes on a beautiful, darker hue. Sunscreen products are available that allow for tanning while still providing protection from the most harmful of the sun's rays. If one intends to spend time on the beach getting a tan, this is a great way to be sensible about it while still enjoying the pleasant effects of the sun.

Those with the most sensitive skin, however, need to take extra precautions. Sunscreen lotion should not only be applied to the arms and upper body, it should also be applied to the ears, the back of the neck and the face. For facial use, there are products available that don’t clog pores and that are extremely gentle as warranted by the tender skin of the face. The nose, in particular, needs protection as it extends outward from the face enough to often be bereft of the protection of a narrow-brimmed hat. This sensitive skin should be given extra attention by way of extra lotion.

Applying sunscreen lotion is a good way to guard your health and enable you to enjoy the fun of the outdoors without paying a price in the form of a painful sunburn. Because of the serious risks posed by sun exposure and the wide variety of natural, gentle products available to mitigate those dangers, there is no good reason not to take advantage of this protection.
