Have you ever been passed over for a promotion....?
A friend was recently told he could not apply for a higher position in his department. This job is in market research for a bank. The company has since hired another person, bring the new person in two levels higher, and twenty-five thousand more per year. Their job descriptions are almost identical, my friend handles the companies largest account.
Both hold BA's in Marketing, my friend is currently enrolled in a MBA program. The new person has no desire to complete an MBA. The new person is responsible for primary research only. My friend is responsible for both primary and secondary research. ( I have no idea what the difference is) The new person has a little over five yrs experience in retail marketing (Lotion company). My friend has six years of professional experience. Two years as a teacher, one year marketing for a manufactoring company and three years at his present job.
Anyone have a similar experience, and how did you handle the situation?
This happened all the time where I worked, and happens in plenty of other places all over. Lots of times they would ask you to train your replacement. It happens mostly in big companies. Small companies are what built this country and made it great.
How to handle it? Remember the name of the game. If their game is to get as much as they can for as little as they can, then your job must be to take (legally and morally, of course) as much of their money as you can. That's what you're there for -- money, right? So... do whatever will lead you into getting them to pay you the most money possible. Don't shoot yourself in the foot. If it's a huge company, quietly look for a transfer. If it's not so large,quietly look for a different company. But in the meantime, grin and bear it and figure out how to get ahead.
