Can you use lotion on your legs before you shave?

Like when your skin is wet after a shower or soaking in a bathtub, can you put on lotion on your legs, let it sit for a while to soften the skin, and then wet your skin again and then put on your shave gel or whatever and start shaving? Will it make the skin and hair softer, therefore easier to get a really nice, close shave?

Has anyone tried this?
yeah i always put lotion on after shaving too.

btw can you use cheap conditioner like suave? i've tried it and it's too runnny.
