What is the time required for concrete to gain its maximum strength?

mostly the designing is done on 28 days strength but I have read that concrete continue to gain strength after 28 days?

Concrete when curing under optimal conditions continues to gain strength ad infinitum. The chemistry of hydration of Portland Cement is a wonder to behold. Initial set and strength growth is a result of incomplete hydration. Thus a seven day, 28 day or 90 day strength is specified depending upon usage. But as time goes on the initial hydration changes to a more complete and effective hydration. This process is much more stable and stronger than any of the earlier forms. Therefore concrete will continue to gain strength over time. However the gains after 90 or 180 days are minimal but measurable all the same.
Of course these can also be affected such as the modification of type of cement or the addition of pozzolans. These also have a long range effect on maximum strength.
