What are the absolute most important things for a defensive lineman to know or to do?

My son plays DT and some DE. He knows his basic job is to stop the run and to get to the QB or RB behind the line. Can you tell me how to read what the offense is going to do before the snap, or at least tell me how to read if they will pass or run before the snap?
If he knew if it was a pass or a run before the snap, it would really help him to know what to do.

first, theres no definate way of telling whether a play is a pass or run. the basic way of play recognition is
1. get of the ball fast, if the offensive lineman sits back, its most likely a pass, if the lineman charges at him its a run.
2. there are little things that can tell you whats going to happen, ie. linemen in pop warner and highschool tend to be light on their fingers when its a pass and when its run thats when their put all their weight on their fingers and u can usually tell from just that.
