Is it safe to go tanning or use mystic tan?

I would like to know if it is safe to do tanning in booths or the mystic tan since I have had Hodgkins Lymphoma (cancer of the lympth nodes) back in 2003? Would it give me cancer or increase my chances of it?

The way tanning beds work is by emitting UVA and UVB rays. The radiation penetrates the skin and within 20 seconds (I could be a little off on the exact amount of seconds), it alters the DNA.

The way cancer works is through mutation. Cancer is a mutated cell that regenerates and creates other mutated cells, and then metastasizes (moves to another part of the body).

So, the radiation changing your DNA means that every time your cells change, there is a chance that one of them will be mutated (cancerous). The more you tan, the more you change the cells, the higher your risk gets.

Therefore, tanning does pose a risk of cancer, and the more you tan the higher the risk. Having had prior cancer experience I would suggest you go out in the sun with sunblock and use as much protection as possible.

Spraytan (Mystic Tan) poses no cancerous risk because it is simply DHA (the stuff found in bronzing lotions and self tanner) that colors the skin. It doesn't change the DNA or cause any mutations.

How long do tanning lotions and mystic tans last?

and are they safe for you?

tanning lotions(if your talking about sunnless tanners) are a stain, and they come off in a week unless you keep applying more. mystic tans are spray tans, they can last up to four weeks i've heard. they are proven safe, try it out.
