there are two ingredients inside which create a color:

DHA (Dihydroxyacetone): this product reacts with the aminoacids of your skin and forms brown melanoids. This is a real chemical reaction and it is linked to the skin. It needs 4 - 5 hours to develop and will fade. (Your skin has around 20 layers and grows from a so called basal layer outside, on the surfcae you loose 1 layer every day). The prodct is absorbed around 5 layers deep and as you loose layers the artificial tan fades.

Caramel: this is a colorant and does not react with the skin, it stays, but you have an immediate "tan". It is not absorbed very deep into the skin and when you shower or jump in a pool it will be washed of immediately. (thats why it is called "Instant Bronze")

I think the best concept is to use a "glow" product: it has a lower concentration of DHA, it is used every day, the tan builds slowly ("build up") and you have the advantage of a daily moisturizer. There are several products in the market and they are around 5 - 7 $.
