What does over exposed film mean?

I recently got my film camera developed and all the pictures turned out blue. The developer said my film was over exposed. What does this mean and how can I prevent it? Thanks!

Too much light got to your film. Are you using your camera on a manual setting? You have to make sure that the shutter speed (how long the lense is open) and f-stop (how much light is being let in to your camera) match up. Now this is all assuming you are using a 35 mm. But when you look in the view finder you can see an indicator. It shows whether your photo will be over exposed, under exposed, or at the correct exposure. The zero in the middle indicates a correct exposure. A zero and a plus means one over exposed. A zero and a minus sign means one under exposed. Just a plus is over exposed and just a minus is under exposed. If you take under exposed photos they will be ligher.
There is also something called bracketing. That is when you take 3 pictures of the same shot, but one is one under ex. and the other is one over ex. This is so you can choose which photo has the best lighting. (Because even though the indicator says its a correct ex. sometimes the lighting is a little off).
