How do you treat a burn?

I burnt my finger in the kitchen - any tips to get it to stop hurting so much? I ran cold water on it right away and have been doing that off and on, plus I have some aloe gel on it - the kind of sunburns.
I know now to put any oils on it like ointment or butter.
Also, there is a raised portion to it now - its not a typical blister like fluid filled, just inflamed I think.
Yeah, i am also wondering if a bandage would be OK for bedtime so I do not rub it on things.

You are never, ever supposed to put butter on a first or second degree burn! When you do that you trap heat in rather than letting it come out of the skin, plus you open yourself up for a nasty infection. Also, ice water is harmful as well, as it destroys skin just as a burn does - it is also painful. The key is cool water, not cold, just cool. If there are no open wounds or blisters then it is okay to put aloe gel or burn ointment on it, and over-the-counter pain relievers should help ease the pain while it heals. Keep it clean and again, do not put ice or kitchen products on your burn! Here's a link to a first-aid site for proof:
