Why do my gums hurt when I brush my teeth?

I've whitened my teeth about 3x in the last week and now my gums are sensitive. I also found a cut by my tooth on my lower gum line. I've been washing my mouth out with 50% hydrogen peroxide & 50% water for the last couple of days. It seems to be working so far but it's still uncomfortable to brush my teeth.

I'm in the process of finding a new dentist because the one I have now is not covered by my insurance. So if you have any suggestions on what I can do at home to prevent this from getting worse, please let me know!

P.S. I don't know if this helps but I had an abscess behind my back molar a month ago and they had to remove it by laser. It was probably caused by my whitening trays because they weren't sanitized correctly (I didn't know this until a couple days ago). So it could very well be my trays causing this problem too.

i would say you have gum inflammtion. stop using your whitening trays and the hydrogen peroxide, as it is quite harsh on tissues. your right in saying the trays can cut your gums. if you can rinse with chlorhexidine gluconate, and gently massage your gums when brushing with your toothbrush. don't be scared if bleeding starts on the gums. you need to encourage this to calm inflammation. hope this helps

Dirty Little Secrets

I love being a doctor, I love treating my patients and most of all I love the daily interaction that I am able to have with so many different types of people, different ages, backgrounds, jobs, and so many different stories that I am fortunate enough to hear everyday. It was one such story that prompted me to write this article. She presented to the office as she does many time a year for an evaluation of her feet as she suffers with Diabetes and from time to time develops pain in her big toes from ingrowing nails. This time was different however, not only was she having her usual discomfort she also looked frightened which is highly unusual, so much so that my office manager and front desk personnel commented on it prior to me entering the room. We will call the patient Ms. Wallace, for the purposes of the article as her real name is of course confidential. Ms. Wallace immediately upon me entering the room started apologizing which is never a good sign with patients who have significant medical history, because you just know its not going to be good. Upon my initial evaluation of her right foot I could see swelling of her second toe, and the ominous signs of redness creeping up to the top of her foot, which left untreated/neglected lands these patients in the hospital more often than you would think. Ms. Wallace, as many women do, enjoyed a Mani-Pedi at her local nail salon, which usually is a relaxing past time but unfortunately this time she was injured by the manicurists instrument, and subsequently developed the signs and symptoms that prompted this impromptu visit to my office. I inquired very matter of factly about the sterility of the the instruments used and was shocked at the answer. Ms. Wallace said to me " I don't need to have sterile instruments because they always use the same set on me" Meaning that they keep her "private" instruments in a drawer and only use them on her. I am not sure what shocked me more, that an establishment that services the community doesn't practice appropriate sanitizing techniques or that the patient had felt so safe frequenting this salon. Let me just ask you the reader a question to put this in perspective. "Would you feel comfortable going to a restaurant that never cleaned your fork between visits, even if it was only used for you ?" I hope I know the answer to that. After treating Ms. Wallace and averting a small catastrophe, I started thinking how many other businesses, salons and even doctors offices do not practice acceptable OSHA standards. I was appalled at what I found. It is more the exception and not the rule for any of these places to sterilize their instruments for each patron or patient. I have many friends/colleagues that I speak to either personally or professionally every week, and upon poling them I also found that many are not sterilizing instruments daily, one did not even own a sterilizer. With all of the headlines today about "Killer, Flesh eating, resistant Bacteria" and "Emerging mutating Viruses" you would think people would be holding their physicians, estheticians, and therapists to a higher standard.....and we should! I did not write this to be an alarmist, only to open an eye or two, and hopefully avoid another Ms. Wallace encounter. For anyone who reads this I will be happy to STERILIZE a set of your private instruments in my office FREE of charge for the months of April and May, before your next Mani-Pedi appointment....consider it my version of spring cleaning.
