Is it possible to burn in certain places of your body when tanning?

I was sitting out in the sun today and I applied sun screen (high uva protection and 20 uvb factor) and I reapplied every two hours, but now I have this big reddish uneven spot on my left shoulder and two each on the outside of my thighs. My boyfriend says this is from the wind, but how can that be possible?

It sounds like these might be places that you missed or rubbed after applying. It will lighten up and go away.
