Should I Tan in the Sun or Use A Self Tanner?

I have a medium skin tone in general, but I have a farmer's tan right now. My upper arms are a little white while my forearms are brown. I'm debating between just laying out in the sun or trying this self tanner that I hear is good. The problem is that the tanner is a little expensive.

actually the sun is the best..u'll get Vitamin D also. Just don't spend too much time n the sun on any 1 day...i tan n the sun but i do it 45 min on my back and 45 min on my tummy 3-4 days a week and i got a sweet dark tan.
