Verbal Sexual Harassment

We all know what verbal sexual harassment is or do we? The problem with verbal harassment remains pervasive throughout the workplace and causes hostile workplace harassment complaints and lawsuits as well as reduced productivity. The workplace should be a harassment free zone where everyone can work in a safe and comfortable environment. The productivity of your employees will remain high and it's just the right thing to do.

Some examples of verbal sexual harassment are - imitating a male or female voice in a derogatory way, whistling or catcalling, crude jokes or remarks, lisping to infer a homosexual voice or talking in a breathy sexual way to name just a few.

The best ways as a supervisor to stop the behavior and avoid harassment complaints are the following. Only refer to people by their name, title or a positive non-sexual term.

If you hear a sexual joke or story or a story that belittles a gender or sexual orientation do not smile and tell the person that that type of story is unacceptable in the workplace.

Use a normal tone of voice at all times and expect others to do the same. If you witness an imitation or any sexually charged inference in someone's voice stop them immediately and remind them of the respect they need to show in the workplace.

Lead by example and show your employees that you will not tolerate disrespect or sexually explicit behavior in the workplace.

Keep your workplace a comfortable harassment free zone and avoid "hostile environment workplace harassment" complaints and lawsuits in your organization by stopping all forms of verbal harassment. The respectful workplace is always a more productive one and your ability to be successful as a manager depends on it.
