Is an Aqua Detox Safe?

Let me tell you a quick story.  An aqua detox could help you lose weight, resolve digestive complaints and improve the appearance of your skin, at least, that’s what the proponents of detoxification plans will tell you.  The UK-based “Sense about Science” will tell you that commercial products claiming to detoxify your body should be considered a waste of money.  Some of them could even be dangerous.  The best advice is to be sensible.

Water, in relatively large quantities, is needed by the body to flush away toxins and to replenish fluids lost during the day.  As much as 78% of the human body is water.  A loss of 15% of the body’s water content is usually fatal.  Just a 2% loss causes noticeable symptoms.

We lose some when we perspire, when we exhale and through the excretion of waste products.  When the weather is hot or humid and when we exercise, we lose even more fluids.

If we don’t drink enough water, we will be constipated and headachy.  Fatigue sets in.  Athletic performance decreases.  The heartbeat may be rapid.  Palpitations may occur.  The heart may feel “fluttery”.

Many people are mildly dehydrated all of the time.  Dry skin is one of the outward signs of mild dehydration.  People with dry skin have more wrinkles and their skin is less elastic.

But, you need to be sensible about an aqua detox, because it is possible to drink too much water.  The kidneys can handle a great deal, if they are healthy, but most people do not need more than 2 liters or so per day.  Drinking too much at one time can result in water intoxication, which can be fatal.

In all of the things that we do, moderation and balance are the keys.  You should drink water when you are thirsty and choose water over other beverages, such as sodas, coffee or tea.

An aqua detox usually involves a fast, the exclusion of all foods.  Alternative practitioners might not agree with this next statement.  But, fasting is not good for your health.

Fasting reduces your body’s metabolism.  You will feel ill, headachy and have little energy.  Note that the symptoms caused by fasting are very similar to those caused by mild dehydration.  You need both food and water.

The right eating plan depends on what you want to accomplish.  Let’s look at just one example.  Alternative practitioners sometimes recommend an aqua detox for people with acne.  Here’s a healthier suggestion.

Research indicates that some foods aggravate acne and may be the underlying cause of the condition.  But, instead of fasting, it is more sensible to eliminate the foods that are most likely to be causing the problem.  Those foods are simple carbohydrate, like junk food, white bread and sugar.

Make no mistake about it.  If you are concerned about exposure to toxins, the most sensible thing to do is to start avoiding them.  One of the most common sources of exposure is skincare products or health and beauty aids.  There are thousands of toxins in those products.  So, instead of trying an aqua detox, why not try some healthier skincare products?  It’s the sensible thing to do.
