i am wanting to know if there is a new trend where spray tans is causing and killing people? i saw on the web?

a husband is charged with the muder of his wife and they are saying that it could have been because of the spray tan. i heard this before this was on the web about the spray tan. thanks much!

Seems like a properly done autopsy would reveal the truth in that case (first link below). I suppose it's possible that you could have a reaction to whatever is in the spray if you don't protect yourself from inhaling it. It's healthier just to stay white, lol.

Healthcare Reform Makes Tanning Salons More Expensive

The cast of MTV's Jersey Shore is probably devastated by this news: healthcare reform legislation has increased the cost of indoor tanning. The bill, recently passed by the House and making its way through the Senate, includes several innovative taxes in order to raise money to cover the cost. Reduction of the national deficit is one of the primary concerns of both parties.

As opposed to the increased tax rates for wealthy individuals and couples or the cuts to the Medicare Advantage program, the tanning salon tax is relatively uncontroversial. It entered the bill with little debate; even Republicans, who tend to be anti-tax, have mostly ignored it.

What does the provision do, specifically? It adds a 10 percent tax to indoor tanning services purchased after January 1st. It targets the use of tanning beds that use ultraviolet rays with wavelengths between 200 and 400 nanometers. While popular, these levels of light--often stronger than sunlight--are associated with melanoma and other skin cancer. Cancer treatment is expensive, often including chemotherapy and radiation. Since a person's health insurance will end up paying for much of his or her treatment, it is understandable that they want that largely preventable cost to be reduced.

Tanning salon owners predict that they will lose business, since the 10% tax is charged to the consumer. Customers are confused and angry, and owners are promoting a petition that would eliminate the tax as the Senate makes minor adjustments in preparation to send the bill back to the House. Closings and job losses may result. Fortunately, tanning lotions and spray tans are exempt from the tax. These sunless tanning methods do not have health risks, and savvy owners will increase their offerings of these services.

Many of those in the 18-24 demographic are uninsured, and therefore among those this bill is attempting to help by increasing their access to affordable health insurance. Some of them may consider tanning a part of their beauty regimen, despite the risks. Others in cold climates use the beds to gain exposure to Vitamin D; about 30 minutes of unprotected sunlight (or 10 minutes of concentrated UV rays via tanning beds) can provide the recommended daily amount, although there are safer ways to get the nutrient through diet and other means. However, the overly-tan trend has faded over the past several years, largely thanks to the pale vampires of Twilight fame.

How much money will be raised by the tax? The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the government will collect $2.7 billion over the next decade in order to pay for health insurance reform. Industry advocates predict that the sum could be up to 40% or 50% smaller due to reduced business. Despite the drawbacks, many appear to consider it to be as much of a public health issue as a fundraising mechanism, similar to state taxes on cigarettes.
