If I wear SPF 30 when I go to the beach, can I still get a tan?

I went to the dermatologist yesterday. I have a very nice tan right now because I have been to the tanning bed and the beach a few time. I know the sun and tanning bed are bad for your skin but everyone looks better with a tan. The doctor told me that to wear at least SPF 30 when I am in the sun. My question is... If I wear that strong of sunblock will I still get a tan? Please nothing about skin cancer or anything like that. I would like to start taking better care of my skin but I don't want to be pale all the time.

Yes, it's possible to still get some color. In fact, if you're going to be out in the sun, that's the best way to tan - you still get color but with less damage to your skin.
