Which version of this photo do you prefer ?

Here is the original which was unfortunately taken with a cloudless sky which gave nothing for the light of the sun to reflect off.

Here is the shot with a replaced sky and a colour adaption to the bottom left wich came out orange due to street lamp behind me.

Any other opinions, critiques, suggestions welcome.

Also I'd like to know your opinion on "sky replacing". Is it going too far ? Personally I am a little uncomfortable with it.

Very nice feel to both images.

I do like the foreground detail on the rocks, the colour on them is fascinating. Very well done on that.

However two points on your foreground stick out for me personally.

The small brighter section on the lower right of the longest rock is very distracting. Instead of the long rock leading my eyes towards the sky, it leads them back towards that section. I would personally consider toning that down a little.

Also, the extreme foreground, the shallow water, has lost it's detail. Or was that intentional?

To answer your replacing sky question. Ethically, I suppose getting it right straight from the camera is preferable, but if the technology is there why not use it. (After all, We did doctor film images.) Besides, if you take two images of the same landscape and one sky turns out better than the other for whatever reason, then technically they're virtually the same shot anyway. Though I'm not a fan of over manipulating to save a bad image.

With that said, I really would make a third image by placing the sky from the second and pasting it into the first, just below the water line to hide the join more easily with a touch of light feathering. Your foreground rocks have nice detail and hold the interest, but in the first one they lead the eye to nowhere. Just emptiness.

I feel the foreground looks better in the first, and the replaced sky infinitely better in the second, especially with moody clouds and the sunburst from over the horizon. Very nice.

Are they sharp by the way, and what was your shutter speed?
