Stereo-typing the Sun!
STEREO (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory) is the third mission in NASA's Solar Terrestrial Probes program (STP). This two-year mission was launched October 2006 with teh goal of providing a unique and revolutionary view of the Sun-Earth System. The two nearly identical observatories - one ahead of Earth in its orbit, the other trailing behind - will trace the flow of energy and matter from the Sun to Earth.
The STEREO twin spacecraft unexpectedly detected particles from the edge of the solar system last year. This helped scientists map the energized particles where the hot solar wind slams into the cold interstellar medium. We are spending more and more time in the study of the sun which gives life and can take it. Many are concerned that we could be looking at what might have happend tens of thousands of years ago- a magnetic pole reversal of the sun which would do the same here on earth.
While the Sun is some 93,000,000 miles away (thankfully), we feel the effects of any bad days it may experience. Those zits or acne breakouts on the face of the sun are potentially deadly for us. Put this data in your 2012 Sun file folder:
1-The sun has an eleven year cycle. 2-Galileo was the first person to tell us this when he invented the telescope in 1610. 3-The cycle has a low end acne break out on the face or surface and a high end. 4-Bad things happen when the high end of activity breaks out and the acne boils fester big time!. 5-Since 1940 the festering peaks or outbreaks have become more severe. 6-In this current cycle which was to be in it’s low activity in 2005, the Sun went nuts! 7-So what can be expect at it's peak in 2012? We may not want to know!
STEREO is giving us vast amounts of new information to digest. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are powerful eruptions that can blow up to 10 billion tons of the Sun's atmosphere into interplanetary space. Traveling away from the Sun at speeds of approximately one million mph (1.6 million kph), CMEs can create major disturbances in the interplanetary medium and trigger severe magnetic storms when they collide with Earth's magnetosphere.
Not good stuff!
Large geomagnetic storms directed towards Earth can damage and even destroy satellites, are extremely hazardous to Astronauts when outside of the protection of the Space Shuttle or the International Space Station performing Extra Vehicular Activities (EVAs), and they have been known to cause electrical power outages. According to many scientists we only have a few years left to figure out what we think we can figure out.
Is there any answer other than an exponential increase in consciousness?
