Are the effects of getting a Tan from the sun and getting Sunburnt from the sun different or the same?

The effects they have on your body/ health I mean. Is tanning the same as burning just going a different colour? Or is tanning much healthier than burning? also, can you still tan when you put on suncream, just stop the unhealthy stuff getting in? or is it all related?

Tanning is a natural reaction to exposure to sunlight: your skin produces the pigment melanin to protect it from the harmful UVA and UVB ultraviolet radiation in sunlight. The greater the exposure to sunlight, the deeper the tan will get (within limits). Every person has their own 'natural' amount of melanin, and most (with the exception of albinos) have the ability to tan. However, some people have so little natural pigmentation that, on exposure to sunlight, rather than tanning gradually, they burn. That is, the skin does not produce any protective pigment, but is instead damaged (literally 'burnt') by the sun. This is dangerous: not only does it age the skin badly (think of old, leathery ladies who have moved from the UK to Spain), but it increases the chances of skin cancer, due to the genetic damage done by the UV light. Sunburn can be so bad as to cause blistering and peeling of the skin.

So, basically, not the same thing at all. Tanning, particularly when it's done gradually, is relatively safe (though the safest, albeit most impractical thing would be to either stay out of the sun altogether, or wear Factor 10000). Burning is quite a different matter!
