In the Sun $11.18 After distinguished tours of duty with lounge-pop pioneers the Coctails and post-rock innovators the Sea and Cake, Archer Prewitt finally steps out on his own with In the Sun, a buoyant and impeccably crafted record whose spare, gently insistent pop approach channels the creative spirit of his previous projects even as it stakes out territory entirely its own. While the slinky "Rush Hour" and "Work" offer up wry funk-pop grooves and the regal instrumental "You Walk By" anticipates the full-blown string and horn arrangements of the superior follow-up White Sky, by and large In the Sun maintains a simple, straightforward presence -- Prewitt's clever melodies don't need much adornment to sink in, relying instead on his tasteful guitar leads and warm, intimate vocals. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi Performers: Ken Sluiter - Clapping; Darcy Vaughn - Viola; John Upchurch - Clarinet (Bass), Guitar; Marion Peterson - Cello; Popahna Brandes - Cello; Poppy Branders - Cello; Archer Prewitt - Roland Synthesizer, Tambourine, Vocals, Organ, Bass, Guitar, Percussion, Drums; Chris Weare - Piano, Piano (Electric); Jesse Peterson |

Sun on Sun $11.98 Pontiak are the Carney brothers, a power trio of siblings. Sun on Sun is their debut, and while they aren't exactly reinventing the wheel, they have managed to come up with a fairly personal sound. There's a heaviness, but it's not really heavy rock and it's certainly not metal. There's an expansive psychedelic element, but you couldn't really call it psychedelic rock, either. The guitarist is no virtuoso, but turns in some great solos and does some nice feedback work as well (instruments are not listed with the names). The rhythm section is really locked together (as sibling rhythm sections often are) even when the tempo is surging back and forth, like at the beginning of "White Mice." To their credit, they're never in a hurry to get anywhere, instead preferring languid tempos and allowing the songs to develop at their own pace. The addition of organ on a couple tracks and the acoustic closer provide a nice bit of variety to their power trio jamming. A solid debut. ~ Sean Westergaard, Rovi |
