ability to suntan?

I had a simple question........

Naturally my skin color is white but I have an ability to suntan. Basically it turns more yellow and orange. Others who I know who have my natural skin color tan reddish. Are their genes for an ability to tan. My father is olive skinned and my mom is pale. naturally my color is somewhere in between but more towards the lighter side.
Nicole Richie is partially mexican. That is why she is tan. Believe me, she is more natural is anybody.

I think there might be something genetic about tanning...

I think it really has to do with the amount of melanin in your skin.

Melanin is the chemical compound that creates pigment in your skin, and it can change depending on how much sun exposure you get.

The more melanin you have, the darker you get.

Africans are very dark skinned because they have high levels of Melanin due to the sun exposure they endured for Millenia.

People in Ireland for instance will have very light skin because they don't get very much sun exposure.

I, myself have a parent who is light skinned, and one who has kind of a dark dark olive skin. My mother was born in Cuba, my father was born in Egypt. So I think their genetics determined how much melanin they had in their skin.

Me? I got the light skin. I BURN when I'm in the sun. I do not have an ability to tan without the help of A LOT of sunscreen.

I use Neutrogena 70 spf. That's the only thing that allows me to get a safe and very slight tan.

What is the best way to get a dark but totally natural suntan?

and by the way, its summer and like 80-90 degrees where i live.

lay out in the sun for a couple weeks , every day for like two hours , an hour on each side and youll get pretty dark
