Science Homework Help Needed!?

Out of the following, which are heterogeneous: (tried to make plural)
1. superburger
2. whipped cream
3. antifreeze
4. toothpaste
5. suntan lotion
6. fog
7. salt & pepper
8. stainless steel
9. cereal with millk
10. salad dressing
*Please mention the ones that are homogeneous*

Let's start with some definitions:

From Wikipedia: "Mixtures are either homogeneous or heterogeneous. A homogeneous mixture is a type of mixture in which the composition is uniform. A heterogeneous mixture is a type of mixture the composition of which can easily be identified since there are two or more phases present."

Given those definitions:

1. The 'superburger' has burger, bun, and whatever you put on it... so it is heterogenous

2. whipped cream is the same throughout... homogeneous

3. antifreeze is the same throughout ... homogeneous

4. toothpaste is USUALLY the same throughout... so it is homogeneous (unless it's one of the kinds with stripes, sparkles etc... then it would be heterogeneous.

5. suntan lotion is the same throughout... homogeneous

6. fog is a tricky one. If it is thick enough, it would appear uniform and is therefore homogeneous, but if it is thinner, you may see differences in the density, making it heterogeneous

7. salt is homogeneous on it's own. Pepper may be also. However, together they would be heterogeneous.

8. Stainless steel is a uniform alloy ... homogeneous

9. Cereal with milk... see #1

10. Salad dressing could be either, depending on the type.

So... Homogeneous are 2, 3, 5 and 8; heterogeneous are 1, 7 and 9; could be either are 4, 6 and 10
