How can I prevent self-tanner from becoming splotchy?

When I apply my self tanner to my neck/chest, it looks fine in the lighting in my room, but once I step outside, it looks all splotchy and weird on my chest and neck. Are there any tips/tricks out there to maybe prevent it? It doesn't get all gross on my arms and other parts of my body, it actually blends nicely. So yeah, any tips? Thanks. I'm using L'oreal's Sublime Bronze One Day Tinted Gel, by the way.

the final outlook is ALWAYS affected by the way that you put it on. products that say "streak-free" are bull, if you put it on streaky, it's going to dry streaky, it's as easy at that. as for the splotches around your neck i would say that it is most likely caused from patches here and there that had not been rubbed in completely. remember when applying not to put too much and to rub it in real well. i know that their gel is really liquidy so you can see where the product is starting to dry and where the little patches are. exfoliating before fake bake is always a good idea, evens out the skin and keeps the product from being wasted on dead skin cells that are preparing to fall off.
cudos by the way on going for a self tanner rather than to a tanning bed! those things should be illegal and are nothing but 100% UVA rays (mostly aging and damages the skin in the deeper layers)!
remember with self tanners that if you have an oilier skin type, the lower pH will turn the color slightly orange, if that is the case, stay away from more acidic foods
