Power transformer & surge protector for US to UK?

I'll be moving to Scotland soon, taking most of my electronic devices with me. For those devices that don't all you to switch between the different voltages, I was hoping to get a high-voltage rated transformer and then just plugging in a standard US power strip into that, being sure that the total voltage is less than the transformer's rating. Will this work or should I completely avoid plugging in a US power strip? What's the most cost-effective way of handling this power switch for all my electronic devices?

Just remember that many devices with clocks use the power line frequency -- and it's different (50Hz) in Scotland than here (60 Hz).

Also, many things with motors are affected the same way. Heating elements (hair styling equip., hot plates, etc) also could have problems.

Your big concern for the transformer isn't the voltage rating (240V), but the current (A) or total watts (W = V x A). Each device uses the same voltage but different current; you have to add the all current together to get the total. Sizing on for all devices on at the same time could be expensive -- would you really use them all at once? If not, you'll over pay for the transformer (and its shipping).

You should consider selling your stuff here, saving the shipping costs, and getting new ones (that can't do the voltage switch) there. Remember, you won't be able to get things repaired there, since they'll have the wrong (50Hz) parts.
