How to apply the right amount of sunscreen?

I bought Neutrogena UltraSheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF 55 for my face. It says to apply generously, but how much is generous enough? For example, a dime size amount should cover how many square inches of my skin?
I already bought this and I don't want to spray things on my face, it might get on my hair and eyes.

Also, why do we have to wait for it to absorb into our skin before going out? Shouldn't the ingredients protect us while they are On our skin as well?
I'm using a high spf because I've been using glycolic acid on my skin.

Actually, you chose the right sunscreen! Neutrogena's Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 30 and SPF 45 aren't that great. They only protect against UVB rays (causes burning) and not UVA rays (causes tanning and alters skin's DNA -> premature wrinkles, damaged collagen and elastin, etc.).

Reason --> SPF 55 has Helioplex (so does SPF 70). SPF 30 and 45 do not. Helioplex stabilizes the ingredient Avobenzone, which protects againts UVA. Thus, Neutrogena's SPF 55 and 70 offer true Broad-Spectrum Protection (UVA and UVB).

Anyway, it's recommended that for the face only, a teaspoon of sunscreen/sunblock should be used. Half a teaspoon for the neck area. It's also recommended that you apply sunscreen/sunblock, let absorb and dry for 20-30 minutes and apply a little more again all over the areas you previously applied sunscreen/sunblock to. This ensures effectiveness. The amount of sunscreen/sunblock for your second application depends entirely on you. You don't need another teaspoon of it on your face (you could if you want but you could do less). Reapply every two-three hours.
