Is it unsafe to carry an umbrella with a metal shaft in a thunderstorm?

I was doing a Google search on it. USA Today seems to claim that as long as you are not the tallest object in the area you will be safe. I figured the metal in the umbrella would attract lightning. Please only answer if you know for a fact or have good resources. Thanks!
