Uva Tanning Do UVA / UVB filter protection sprays also stop you from tanning?
Someone told me that using sun cremes with UVA and UVB protection filters also prevent tanning. Is this true?
No, it's not true. They prevent a lot of the rays from getting through, but not ALL. You will still get a tan, you just won't burn. The best way to use these is to take the number of SPF (15, 30, 45) and reapply the sunblock in that amount of minutes. For example, if you're wearing SPF 30 and it's very sunny, reapply every 30 minutes. You can space out the intervals a little more if you don't feel you're tanning enough. So 30 minutes would be every 45 minutes or every hour instead.
A tanning bed or sunbed is a device emitting ultraviolet radiation (typically 95 UVA and 5 UVB, +/3) used to produce a cosmetic tan. Regular tanning beds use several fluorescent lamps that have phosphor blends designed to emit UV in a spectrum that is somewhat similar to the sun. Smaller, home tanning beds usually have 12 to 28 100 watt lamps while systems found in salons can run from 24 to 60 lamps, each consuming 100 to 200 watts. There are also high pressure tanning beds that generate primarily UVA with some UVB by using highly specialized quartz lamps, reflector systems and filters. These are much more expensive, thus less commonly used. A tanning booth is quite similar to a tanning bed, but the individual stands while tanning and the typical power output of booths is higher. Sunless tanning (also known as self tanning, fake tanning, or UVfree tanning) refers to applying chemicals to the body to produce an effect similar in appearance to a more traditional suntan. Sunless tanning arose in response to links between sun exposure and skin cancer discovered in the 1960s, along with other alternatives to natural sun tanning such as the use of a sunbed or tanning bed.The most effective products available are sunless tanning or self tanning lotions and sprays that contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. The tan is not a dye, stain or paint, but a chemical reaction between the DHA and the amino acids in the dead layer on the skin surface. citation needed] This is similar to a reaction well known to food chemists called the Maillard reaction. Tanning addiction is a rare syndrome where an individual appears to have a physical and/or psychological addiction to sunbathing or the use of tanning beds. The mechanism of the addiction is unknown at this time.In 2005, a group of dermatologists published a study showing that frequent tanners experience a loss of control over their tanning schedule, displaying a pattern of addiction similar to smokers and alcoholics.Biochemical evidence indicates that tanning addicts are addicted to an opioid release experienced during tanning. When frequent tanners took an endorphin blocker in a 2006 study, they experienced severe withdrawal symptoms, while infrequent tanners experienced no withdrawal symptoms under the same conditions. Know the Side Effects of Tanning Beds
Tanning beds can be an easy way to get a great tan without spending hours under a hot sun. However, tanning salons are getting a bad rep due to myths and rumors about people cooking their internal organs, and their skin falling off due to too much UV radiation. As scary as it sounds, tanning beds do have harmful effects associated with them, however they aren't going to cook your insides and make your skin fall off.
The Ultraviolet rays that tanning beds emit are considered the most dangerous aspect of tanning beds. There are 2 basic types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVB rays are the same rays associated with sun rays, which can cause sunburns or skin cancer. Tanning beds mainly emit UVA rays. This type of energy is thought to penetrate the skin much deeper than UVB, and can therefore cause long-term skin damage. People using a tanning bed within the recommended time limited are at much less risk of getting burned - due to the nature of the UVA rays. However, UVA rays are also linked to the most deadly form of skin cancer, malignant melanoma. Due to the popularity and sometimes misuse of tanning beds, malignant melanoma is becoming more common.
Overuse of tanning beds or tanning in general can also cause loss of skin elasticity and premature aging. Many people don't realize these effects until much later in life due to the delay of the damage caused by the harmful rays. Some proponents of tanning beds claim that UV rays are a healthy way to promote the body to produce Vitamin D, but the amount of UV rays needed for it is very minimal.
Fortunately tanning beds can be safe and the dangers can be limited with proper use of protective measures. Most tanning salons provide UV protective lotions and eyewear to consumers. Although there really is no completely safe UV ray exposure, tanning beds don't have to be cancer inducing devices if used within their recommended range and limits.
The bottom line is if you use precaution and the proper techniques to protect yourself, tanning beds can be a great way to improve the look of your tan.
